Certified Private Instructor

Mitch Lee is a drummer and teacher dedicated to the art of learning and performing great music. At age four, he was singing on stage with his family's band. He started playing the drums at age eight. He began teaching drums when just fourteen, and gigging at fifteen. In school, Mitch excelled at music. Orem High School recognized him with the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. He studied music performance at Brigham Young University under renowned teachers Jay Lawrence, Ron Brough, and Randall Beach. Mitch toured nine European countries with BYU's internationally touted big band, Synthesis, and quickly became known as the exciting, powerhouse drummer that he is! When legendary Jazz drummer, Louie Bellson, saw Mitch perform in Switzerland, he told him, "You don't need to take a backseat to anybody...you play just great!" Since then, Mitch has performed with a long list of pro bands, spanning the full spectrum of music genres (Pop/Rock, Rock, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Swing, Dixieland, African, Italian, Avant Garde, etc.). He has gigged/recorded with Utah greats Jerry Floor, Joshua Payne, Joe Muscolino Band, Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra, and Utah Swing Orchestra, to name a few.Mitch discovered early that he wanted to teach others how to play the drums. His teaching career began small at his home studio and has since resulted in many years of teaching drums as paid faculty at junior high schools, high schools, plus Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University-Idaho. Mitch has also taught masterclasses galore, as well as introduced children and youth groups to drumming and music generally. Fellow music teachers have either enrolled their own children in lessons with Mitch, or studied with him themselves!

TEACHING STYLE

To me, learning to play music is like a perilous journey! It is full of mountains to climb, pitfalls to avoid, exhilarating vistas to relish, steep downward slopes to navigate slowly and deliberately, and far-off destinations to dream about and reach. We can choose to chart our own course, employ dependable maps, or seek out a knowledgeable guide to ensure our success in arriving where we want to go. How we begin, what we decide to take with us, how we prepare for each coming challenge, and how we proceed will all absolutely affect the outcome! My musical journey continues! It has been everything I've just described and more. As I go along, I meet new travelers who I seek to help (if they are open to receiving my help). What I know, I share. What new things I learn, I also share. Realizing that each traveler is unique, I am sensitive to the individual's struggles and setbacks. I am patient. I encourage. I also remind and warn as necessary. Best of all, I guide and therefore get to see the positive moments and the cool destinations along the way...because we are on the journey together!
