Biology: Semester 1
Description: After learning about the scientific method, students will study life at its most basic level: the cell. Students will then use the cell as a foundation for understanding how life evolves, including a detailed discussion of DNA, genetics, and evolution. Each lesson in this course includes an interview with a professional in a career related to biology. Two thousand years ago most people agreed that life, death, sickness, and health were the result of fickle gods. Today we know a little more about the principles behind life and seek to learn more through the study of biology. Throughout their studies, students will list the steps of the scientific method; describe the characteristics of living things; demonstrate knowledge of organic macromolecules; describe the structures of a cell and indicate their functions and locations; describe the process of photosynthesis; model the structure of the DNA molecule; figure genetics equations; and summarize the process of natural selection.
