Karen Sanders enjoys an active musical career in both flute pedagogy and performance. She has played multiple solo recitals, chamber and ensemble concerts, and is the Winner of the 2010 Western Illinois University Concerto Competition Winner and the 2017 University of Missouri Concerto Competition. Karen also toured abroad with Western Illinois University Wind Ensemble and Western Illinois University Symphonic Orchestra. Karen is currently principal flutist of the Nauvoo Orchestra.
As an educator, Karen held the Flute Graduate Teaching Assistant position at the University of Missouri and a flute instructor position in the Community Music Program. Currently, Karen teaches from her private studio while finishing her beginner flute method book, taking wing, to be published through Flutistry Boston.
In tandem with her musical life, Karen is an AmSAT certified teacher of Alexander Technique. Under the world class tutelage of Joan and Alex Murray, she received training in while simultaneously apprenticing at the University of Illinois working with musicians, actors, and dancers. Karen has since presented multiple masterclasses and completed residencies at Oklahoma State University, University of Missouri, and Western Illinois University.
An advocate of music outreach opportunities, Karen founded both Nauvoo Flute Day, a festival of workshops and concerts open to all flutists, and the Future Flutists Youth Scholarship, an award used to help dedicated flute students in financial need.
Karen Sanders received her BM from Western Illinois University, an AmSAT Alexander Technique Certification from Alexander Technique Center of Urbana, and a MM from the University of Missouri in 2017.
Teaching is all about guiding students to become the best version of themselves through their chosen craft. For music, I believe a balance between technique, exploration, and student interests make the best combination for a successful learning environment and promotes confidence and creativity. My goal for each lesson is for students to feel inspired and motivated to continue working towards their musical goals. Students will also be able to see marked improvement in their playing and a more comprehensive understanding of the flute and music.
