Bass Guitar: Basics 2 COMING SOON

Description: Welcome to Bass Guitar: Basics 2! This course is a continuation of Bass Guitar: Basics 1, and is designed to keep your bass guitar playing moving forward by teaching you more techniques (like slap-bass!), rhythms, grooves, scales and improvisation. You are going to have a solid foundation in bass playing when you finish this course. As with the first course, Bass Guitar: Basics 2 will teach you new concepts through written dialogue, diagrams, etudes, performance pieces, and videos.

Bass: Basics 1—UC Approved

Description: Welcome to Bass Guitar: Basics 1. This course is designed to introduce students to the bass guitar, and get them passionate about playing the instrument. Students will explore and learn about the instrument, proper playing technique, styles of music, and important figures in bass history. This course will teach students how to read standard notation, tablature, fingerboard diagrams, and chord charts both in reading and, eventually, composing and improvising on the bass. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made, original compositions, and a skill set to tackle new music. They’ll also be ready to start Bass Basics 2!

Classical Guitar: Basics 1 – UC Approved

Description: Welcome to Classical Guitar: Basics 1! In this course students will not only learn a great deal about the basics of playing the classical guitar, but also the basics of music in general.

This course delves into the history of the classical guitar, showing students how the instrument was developed and how music evolved from important composers and performers. Proper playing technique is foundational to the course, and is supported through warm-ups, technical exercises, and playing etudes. Students will learn new songs in every lesson to improve notational reading skills, playing, and ear training. Lastly, students will interact with a variety of media platforms that showcase incredible players and inspire personal growth. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!

It is highly recommended that students approach their studies with the help of an instructor, unless this is absolutely not possible. An instructor will be able to help further clarify musical and technical issues that will certainly come up during this course, and will certainly help students move through the course faster and with more confidence. This course provides a comprehensive guide to getting students playing the classical guitar, but learning with others can be an excellent way to foster appreciation and excitement when first starting out.

Classical Guitar: Basics 2 – UC Approved

Description: Welcome to Classical Guitar: Basics 2! Building upon topics learned in Basics 1, students will dive further into the fundamentals of playing the classical guitar, and develop their reading and listening skills to better understand how music is written for their instrument. This course features more intermediate technique to challenge students, analyzes scale construction for major and minor scales, uses ear training (interval recognition) to help with more efficient reading and learning, and discusses important classical guitar figures that shaped the history of the instrument. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!

Contemporary Keyboarding: Basics 1—UC Approved

Description: Welcome to Contemporary Keyboarding: Basics 1. This class takes students through the evolution of the classical-era piano and into the modern synthesizer. Students will learn the history of the instrument, explore and play different types of music, and learn about notable players. Throughout this semester students will focus on reading music, developing proper technique, understanding and applying music theory concepts, as well as how to improvise and even compose original music. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!

Description: Welcome to Contemporary Keyboarding: Basics 2! This course is designed to be taken after Basics 1, and will continue to expand and develop previous material, as well as introducing several new concepts: classical and contemporary skills, chords, playing and interpreting lead sheets, and how to strengthen technique and overall control of the instrument. As in Basics 1, you will have the opportunity for improvisation and composition exercises to continue to develop your own musical style and refine your piano skills.

Drums: Basics 1—UC Approved

Description: Welcome to Drums Basics 1! This course is , and focuses on creating a solid drumming foundation. Throughout the course students will study the fundamentals of playing drum set, including developing proper technique, learning to read music for the drum set, and learning to play essential groove and fill ideas that every drummer needs to know. This course highlights the invention of primitive to modern drums and discusses how drumming has evolved over centuries. Students will learn how to count and hear rhythms accurately, and will sharpen their counting skills through play-along and listening assignments. By the end of the course, students will have a fundamental understanding of how to play each drum in the drum kit and how to come up with grooves of their own. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!

Drums: Basics 2—UC Approved

Description: Welcome to Drums: Basics 2! In this second course of lessons for drum set, the focus is on groove drumming. Students will explore adding more texture and substance to grooves by using open/close hihat techniques (hihat “barking”), and incorporating the bell of the ride for accented patterns that will take their grooves to the next level. Students will also dedicate lessons to sixteenth-note based grooves, focusing on new and exciting sixteenth note bass drum patterns, as well as technique for playing up-tempo sixteenth-note grooves using alternating hand patterns. In addition to the straight ahead sixteenth-note grooves students will learn a few of the tried and true syncopated ride and hihat patterns that will transform the sound and feel of their grooves and provide some great new options for them to explore. This course also begins looking to move away from the backbeat by exploring different snare drum ideas and rhythms within these grooves. Lastly, there’s an added lesson focusing on a groove concept created by the legend himself, Steve Gadd, which will be sure to challenge students, and allow them to sound like a true pro! Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester! Drums: Basics 2 is loaded with more of the basic drumming techniques that every drummer needs to know, so buckle up and dig in!

Flute: Basics 1—UC Approved

Description: Welcome to the wonderful world of flute! Flute: Basics 1 lays a solid foundation for the beginning flutist. Breathing, sound development, embouchure, posture, instrument assembly, and note reading are among the first topics covered. Students will also learn about the history of the flute, listen to a variety of genres of flute music, and understand proper flute maintenance with lots of listening and video examples to reinforce all topics. Throughout the course, effective practice—like warming up, productive habits, and other essential exercises—are explored, each lesson packed with ample information and exercises for students to develop their flute playing skills.
Lastly, musical skills such as reading music, composing music, and improvising are also covered. All of this combined will create well-rounded flutists and musicians! Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!

Flute: Basics 2—UC Approved

Description: Flute: Basics 2 continues students’ exploration of topics covered in Basics 1. Students will look more at technique, specifically working on embouchure development and breath control. They will also continue their study of basic note and rhythm reading skills, and will work towards learning all major scales and arpeggios. New topics such as the introduction of famous and influential flutists, an introduction to the members of the flute family, and topics in world music are covered to broaden students’ perspective and understanding of the instrument. Finally, students will learn a variety of expressive options to improve technical skills and enhance their sound. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!
