John Odom

Certified Private Instructor

I started playing the drums at the age of ten. I have played in symphonic bands in Junior High and High School. I also played in the Drum and Bugle Corps while in the Air Force. I have been playing the drums in church for many years and I am currently the Worship Drummer for my church. I also play in a Christian rock band. This experience of playing live with other musicians has prepared me to skillfully demonstrate how to play grooves and fills that best serve the music. I have been teaching the drums since September of 2009. Currently I am teaching at Orlando Fine Arts Academy in Orlando. I am also a teacher with Lessons in Your Home. I have had the privilege of attending several drum clinics by some of the top drummers and teachers in the business. I completed the Drumset Fundamentals Course with Berklee College of Music in 2012. I am a member of the D'Addario Education Collective, the Professional Drum Teachers Guild, and the Sabian Education Network. I am also a certified instructor with both Drumeo and Drumsense. I believe that the best teachers are students of their instrument. This is paramount to me as a music teacher.

TEACHING STYLE

I specialize with helping beginners who have never played. I break down the science of rudiments, beats, fills, and counting to where it can be more easily understood. I use the wisdom of other drummers and teachers to help explain the art of drumming. I do not allow my students to use the word "can't." I encourage them to say "I'll try" and I show them the concepts until they get it. I put my whole heart and soul into every lesson and my I make sure my love for the art of drumming shines through and affects my students in a positive way.
